We could all use a little whimsy and fun in our lives right now. If the way to do that is through breakfast, so be it. Smoothies have become a ubiquitous morning option and at one point we went so far into the smoothie trend, spending time making ombré smoothies seemed normal. There is a more simple way to make colorful, fun smoothies that blend in a bit of wellness. Think ‘moon milk’ lattes but you chuck everything in a blender and pour.
You can make rainbow wellness milkshakes with anything your heart desires including collagen, protein powders, adaptogens, and whatever becomes popular next. To make a creamy base, follow this formula and add less banana and ice if you’re adding other frozen fruit, and more liquid if you’re opting to add a more substantial amount of powder (eg two scoops of protein powder). You’re going for thick, but very pourable (straw-able).
1 frozen banana + 4 ice cubes + 1 cup of milk of choice
As for getting a crispy color, that’s why the base is all neutrals! While you could absolutely use frozen mango or avocado to get a creamy base, it may muddle the color with the natural orange pigmentation. Think about smoothie building from a color wheel perspective!
Want a fun true retro milkshake topping? There are lots of whipped toppings available on the market, from coconut whip in a can to soy or standard heavy cream. Is it an ‘everyday’ smoothie item? No. But who says a Monday or Friday isn’t a good enough reason for a little whipped topping?
