Chicken and waffles are a staple in our family and in our culture! The pairing of warm, sweet waffles with crispy, savory fried chicken is one of the world’s BEST combinations. Giving peanut butter and jelly, toast and jam, and even milk and cookies a run for their money. And the best part about this chicken? It’s AIR FRIED.
If you’ve never had chicken and waffles then I suggest you head out to your nearest Roscoe’s or Lolo’s next time you’re on the West Coast and get yourself some. Once you’ve tasted the real deal you’ll be able to bring that craving home and make it in your kitchen!
I’m a big fan of grease-dripping fried chicken. When it’s done right, your hands will show it! But there’s a time and a place for EVERYTHING right? So if you want to indulge a bit without going overboard then I suggest you try using an air fryer to cut some calories while making this delicious comfort food!
Never used an air fryer before? Well, you’re in for a treat! It’s the next big thing in the kitchen appliance world and it’s making home chefs like me really happy! Why? Well because you can make all those delicious fried foods WITHOUT all the fat. Actually, almost 90% less fat thanks to some super fancy turbostar technology. Yep, all your favorites like french fries, fried chicken, roast, whole chickens, buffalo wings, tortilla chips, brownies. Should I go on?
I’m very thankful to report that the Philips Airfryer XXL is SO easy to use. There is nothing worse than getting a new appliance and just staring at it for 20 minutes trying to figure it out! With just a few clicks and moves on the dial, you’ll be on your way! I tried out the XXL for this particular meal because I knew I would be making large batches and it worked perfectly!
Once I got my chicken prepared, washed and dipped, I turned the air fryer on and set it to 350º per the directions in the manual for chicken.
For the best results here are a few tips!
- While you’re placing the chicken on the rack, make sure you leave plenty of room for the air to circulate. This helps get that fried chicken coating!
- Don’t coat the chicken to many times. My best batch was when I dipped the chicken into the egg mixture, then into the flour! Just once! Just make sure it has a nice thick coating!
- Let the chicken rest! This was a tip I picked up on Divas Can Cook! Just like when you deep fry chicken, you want the flour to really soak into the egg mixture!
- Before putting the chicken into the air fryer, spray it with vegetable oil! This will help it crisp up just right.
- Once the chicken is crispy on one side, flip it over and continue on the other!
While the chicken was cooking, I went ahead and got the waffles going. For chicken and waffles I like my waffles to be a bit thinner. So this All-Clad Waffle Maker is a perfect fit. It makes about 8-inch waffles that are thin enough to wrap around your chicken bites perfectly.
This waffle recipe calls for not only vanilla but also a touch of cinnamon that really sets the flavors apart! Each bite will bring that perfect combination of sweet and savory. SO GOOD!
Preheat the waffle maker for about 10 minutes or until the light is green. Spray with some oil to prevent any sticking.
Once the chicken is done, you will hear a beep from the air fryer! Remove the chicken and serve everything up warm with some syrup or even honey!
