CBD-Infused Spiced Grapefruit Collins Cocktail

After the holidays, we’re all looking for something lighter, brighter and tidier. It holds true for diet, home, and mind. Whether you’re drawn to an organization project like removing excess packaging from your kitchen or simply on the hunt for a recipe that’s bright and botanical, this should bring you both.

In 2019, my husband and I wrote and photographed our first cookbook, “CBD Drinks for Health” which comes out mid-January 2020! With an entire chapter dedicated to cocktails, and many years of cocktail appreciation, we’ve started to expand our barware beyond basics towards a more celebratory style (I mean, we wrote a book - that’s something worth celebrating!).

While I mostly use stainless steel tools, it’s always fun to break out takes on classics while entertaining. Gold barware is festive and can stand the trend test of time. Try and find brands that carry all the basics (a bar spoon, shaking tin & strainer, and a jigger) in an updated secondary finish, like Viski.

Another bar project that’s perfect for the new year is starting a collection of liquor decanters to get rid of branded packaging in your bar area. Not only does this reduce visual clutter from labels, but it’s a great way to bring personality to your space. Mix and match styles to house your staple bar liquors.

A decanter that has an airtight stopper can house liquor for years, but one that rests in the top can still hold liquor for several months before evaporation occurs. My advice is to use decanters for the most often used liquors in your home (the ones that will be used up most quickly).

While I’ve already discussed the importance of clear ice in cocktails, another useful ice tool if you’re expanding your bar tools is an ice crushing bag and mallet. The bag doesn’t add fibers to ice like a dish towel, and doesn’t require use of a plastic bag. Crushed ice can be helpful in building a stable area for garnishes, as well as providing correct dilution for spirit-forward or intensely flavored cocktails.

This recipe for a Spiced Grapefruit Collins is gin-forward mixed with strong grapefruit juice and spiced star anise simple syrup. It’s great with or without CBD oil (yes, even the more hemp forward tasting varieties!).
